Rockdale Music Student FAQ: Getting Started and Maximizing Your Progress

We’re here to support you on your musical journey. If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Before Your First Lesson

Come prepared with your instrument (if applicable), any music books or materials you have, and a notebook for taking notes!

Talk to your teacher or Rockdale staff when you arrive for your lesson. We can help you choose the right instrument and may have loaner/rental options available until you can purchase your own instrument.

If you’re a beginner, relax! Your teacher will guide you through the basics. If you have some experience, review what you know and come prepared with questions and a plan for what you want to work on in your lessons.

During Your Lessons

Lessons are tailored to your individual needs and goals. They may include:

  • Technique exercises
  • Repertoire study (learning songs)
  • Music theory and ear training
  • Performance preparation
  • Discussion of your practice habits and progress

Don’t hesitate to ask questions! Your teacher is there to help you learn and grow.

Be prepared: Bring your instrument, materials, and any questions you have.

Be attentive: Listen carefully to your teacher’s instructions and feedback.

Be active: Participate fully in the lesson and ask questions as needed.

Practicing at Home

Your teacher will give you specific recommendations, but a good starting point for beginners is at least three times the length of your lesson spread over the week. (i.e. if you take a 30-minute lesson you should practice at least 90-minutes each week).

It’s best to practice in more frequent and shorter sessions than in large chunks of time. A good place to start is 15-30 minutes per day to reach your musical goals.

  • Set a regular practice time.
  • Break down tasks into smaller, manageable chunks.
  • Focus on quality over quantity.
  • Use a metronome or practice app to help with timing and accuracy.
  • Record yourself practicing and listen back to identify areas for improvement.

Take a break, come back later, and try a different approach. Remember, progress takes time and patience!

  • Set realistic goals for yourself.
  • Track your progress and celebrate your achievements.
  • Find a practice buddy or join a music group.
  • Attend Rockdale’s recitals and workshops.
  • Explore different genres and styles of music.
