Rock N Roll High School: Rock Violin

Everyone knows violins are super cool. But did you know they can rock out? With so much classical violin info out there (which we love too!), we wanted to take a look back on some of the most iconic violin performances in rock over the years.

1. baba o'reilly / the who

This is one of the most famous rock violin solos of all time. Though the solo was intended to be played on harmonica, Dave Arbus of the group East of Eden added a bit of Celtic flair to the track.

KASHMIR / LED ZEPPELIN

This classic rock anthem includes a killer violin solo in the middle. Robert Plant felt that the addition of the orchestral elements "brought it even more to life."

3. PAPER IN FIRE / JOHN MELLENCAMP

This rock/pop song was heavily influenced by Appalachian music. The prominent fiddle riff is played by Lisa Germano and adds grit to the song.

4. BLACK WATER / DOOBIE BROTHERS

Patrick Simmons was inspired by Delta blues and the American South. The inclusion of the fiddle emphasizes the country influence.

WANT TO TRY YOUR HAND AT ROCK VIOLIN?

Meet Chris Smirnov, our in-house violin and viola teacher! Chris attended Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University to pursue a Music Education degree. He is experienced in a variety of music styles including Classical, Contemporary, and Middle-Eastern.

Here’s what Chris has to say about his philosophy:

“My mission is to give students every tool they need to help them find their own path as a budding musician. Whether it’s playing a Bach sonata with expression or ripping through a blues lick, I wish to help students expand their creativity, and grow as both artists and people!”
