Rockdale teachers are the real deal—we make sure of it! We select our teachers here carefully (think CIA application process but harder), making sure that our team meets three key criteria:
Today, we’re chatting with Chris who teaches violin, viola, guitar, piano, and percussion.
We talked with him about how he got his start, his teaching philosophy, and his hidden talent.
How long have you been teaching music?
I’ve been teaching since 2010. It all started when one of my music teachers in high school recommended me to one of her elementary school students for supplemental lessons. I fell in love with teaching and have since pursued it as my career.
What was your motivation for becoming a teacher?
Seeing students overcome the difficulties of learning music, growing as both musicians and people, and the “lightbulb going off” moments when everything clicks are all magical experiences.
I was also surrounded by amazing teachers growing up who are responsible for the musician and person I am today. I strive to be a good influence and a positive role model for students in turn.
What advice would you give to a new music student?
Don’t just practice hard, practice smart! Learn to celebrate your mistakes! Every mistake is a golden opportunity to grow and learn how “not” to do something. It’s all just part of the process. Don’t forget to “play” your instrument instead of just practicing it.
What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Rockdale?
The atmosphere. When you walk in, your surroundings put you in a great headspace to create music.
What have you been listening to lately?
I’ve been on a Dvorak String Quartet kick lately, as well as listening to a lot of math rock, jazz, and neo-soul.
What’s a fun fact we might be surprised to learn about you?
Aside from performing, teaching, and pursuing a Music Education degree at Temple, I also work as a carpenter to pay the bills!
