Student feature: Alex

Every so often, we have the uncontrollable urge to brag about our amazing students. They really are rockstars…it’s undeniable! It’s only fair we let you in on these up-and-coming musicians before the rest of the world finds them. Consider this your inside track.

So, with all of that said, meet Alex! Alex is a Swiss army knife with all of the fixins! Alex plays drumset, bongos, guitar, piano, sings… and she’s a pretty mean crafter too! Alex started at Rockdale as a young whipper snapper, but now she’s a seasoned vet and even helps out with our Makin’ Music Summer Camp as a counselor and art teacher.

We asked Alex some questions about how she got her start, the music that inspires her, and her experience at Rockdale.

What instrument do you play and how long have you been a part of the Rockdale community?

I take voice lessons with Cecilia, and I take a mix of drum, guitar, and piano lessons with Keaton. I’ve been at Rockdale for a little over six years.

Who are your favorite musicians and artists that you draw inspiration from?

My top artists at the moment are Penelope Scott, McCafferty, Taylor Swift, and Phillipa Soo. I take inspiration from a lot of Broadway sopranos when it comes to singing that type of music, but I otherwise prefer a more relaxed indie or acoustic feel.

What do you like best about being a student at Rockdale?

I enjoy being part of a community that values me as a person. Rockdale has been a part of my life for a while now and I’m extremely grateful to have the support of the staff and students.

What are your future goals as a musician/performer?

I want to continue working on my instruments and become a more well-rounded musician, as well as gaining the confidence to perform. Other than that, I just want to work hard and see where it takes me.

Tell us a fun fact about you!

I worked at the Makin’ Music camp this summer, and even got the chance to be the art teacher for a little while, and it brought back my love for ridiculous crafts. I think I might have enjoyed it as much as the kids did!
